The Denbigh Farm in Greenwich, CT, was built in the late 1700’s by a Quaker family and renovated in the early 1900s by noted New York architects Albro & Lindeberg in the style of an English country estate. It was updated in the early 2000s by Virginia-based architect Allan Greenberg.
In the mid 1990s, the expansive historic estate and a multi-winged manor house were purchased by Susie Hilfiger and her then-husband Tommy Hilfiger, where they raised their children out of the public eye. Susie lived in the home for nearly 30 years.
The property, which covers more than 17 acres overlooking the Long Island Sound, features well-maintained gardens, horse stables, tennis courts, an apple orchard, and a playhouse modeled after George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate. The playhouse was commissioned by Hilfiger following a visit to the former president’s home.
Previous to the Hilfigers, the estate was owned by Joseph Verner Reed Jr., a theatrical producer, author, art collector, U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, Chief of Protocol under President George H.W. Bush, and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations.
When the Hilfigers bought the house, Susie sought the assistance of Colefax & Fowler to bring her vision to life, which drew loose inspiration from Sister Parish. They worked together to create a palette filled with vibrant colors, vintage-inspired fabrics, and intricate patterns.
Scenic Wallpaper was contacted to install a Gracie Studio chinoiserie scenic wallpaper called Gracie Square in and around the winding staircase, with a vibrant orange background, an homage to the iconic Hermes box. Interestingly, the drawing room/ballroom also features a marble mantle that was brought from the 17th century Hotel Particulier Montmartre, the former residence of the Hermes family in Paris.
