Carleton Varney’s original watercolor vision for the entry hall and staircase

The finished project

Scenic Wallpaper was hired to install a custom de Gournay Earlham scenic wallpaper in a home along the Fox River in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Carleton Varney of Dorothy Draper had the original vision for the space, which included a huge entry hall and two curved staircases going to the lower and second floors.

The space was measured carefully on site by Scenic Wallpaper to the quarter of the inch, and scale elevations and floor plans were drawn. Scenic Wallpaper provided all the measurements to de Gournay for the fabrication of the paper in China, and we helped with the planning and layout of the panels and the scenic placement. The wallpaper was custom made for the space, including a custom blue metallic color for the background.

Wallpaper Layout and scene placement

Scaffolding had be installed in the entry way with multiple levels to allow us to reach all areas of the walls to install the long wallpaper panels from floor to ceiling.

Before hanging the wallpaper, we first installed a layer of muslin and and a layer of liner paper, which has been done under scenic wallpapers for the last 150 years. Should there ever be a leak or any other issues, we can remove the paper, preserve the paper, and reinstall the paper back into its original location.
