Zuber’s Les Lointains, Finished Installation
The panoramic wallpaper "Les Lointains,” created by Zuber in 1825, is still printed today using the traditional "à la planche” method with 149 carved antique woodblocks. This scenic paper displays a classical garden scene featuring architectural elements in grisaille, a monochromatic technique using shades of gray, as if to mimic the colors of classical sculpture. The use of this printing technique gives Zuber's sceneries the status of true works of art, and the antique woodblocks have been designated as historically significant artifacts by the French Ministry of Culture.
This Upper West Side entryway features one of Scenic Wallpaper’s installations of Les Lointains, a lush, tranquil garden filled with fountains and foliage.
The client requested that the artwork in the entryway be raised for a higher eye-level placement of the important elements, so the team at Scenic Wallpaper strategically added pieces of the same wallpaper at the bottom of every panel.
During Installation
Our artist then in-painted each panel to blend the two papers and the foliage together seamlessly. This process involved matching the 11 distinct colors in the original design and recreating artwork that organically integrated the design into each individual panel. This attention to detail ensured a cohesive and visually striking final result, where the addition appeared as if it had always been part of the scene.

Through the late 1800s and into the 1900s, scenic wallpapers like these were replicated worldwide. Zuber is the last manufacturer in the world to produce panoramic wallpapers from carved woodblocks, preserving this unique art form and centuries-old tradition.
