Scenic Wallpaper was hired to restore this hand painted antique French wallpaper at a historic family home in Rhode Island, just outside of the town of Exeter. The wallpaper was installed in the dining room of the home, built in 1932. The current owner has spent her career as an interior designer, author, and lecturer focused on research and preservation of architecture and interiors.
Although there has been very little research into these period French papers and the artist is unknown, one or more studios were making hand-painted papers of bucolic French countryside scenes for export in competition with the hand-blocked wallpaper manufacturers of the period.
We cleaned and undertook the restoration of the wallpaper, which had lost quite a bit of color due to age, especially in the sky.
There had been an antique mirror over the mantel at one point, where the background color remained a brighter blue than the surrounding panels. There were also various water stains, wax drips, and other marks that needed to be addressed.
This particular client was interested in making sure that the paper kept its vintage look, so our artist made sure to keep the touch-ups to a minimum, carefully matching the artwork to preserve the antique charm of the wallpaper.
As a coincidence, the client is a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, whose New York chapter headquarters features an antique Chinese wallpaper which we recently restored. Click here to see the restoration.
